A brief, a budget, and room to create.
Suzie came to me without a finished design in mind — just a brief. Practical requirements, a budget, and a rough sense of what she wanted the piece to feel like. No sketch, no reference photo. That’s the other version of this collaboration: someone hands me the constraints, and I work creatively within them.
Suzie came to me with a beautiful pink heart sapphire and a brief: she wanted a ring that felt chunky, organic and substantial, but we also had a budget to work within.
Rather than compromising on the overall look, I concentrated the weight of the gold around the stone and shoulders, then tapered the band underneath. This kept the sculptural, weighty feel Suzie loved while using the gold thoughtfully – and ultimately brought the finished piece in under budget.
There was another practical consideration too. As a hairdresser, Suzie needed a ring she could comfortably wear without claws catching or snagging on hair. I designed a low-profile bezel setting instead, keeping the sapphire protected and the surface smooth.
And because bespoke pieces should feel personal, I hid one final detail within the organic texture of the ring – a little S for Suzie.
Before anything was cast, I sculpted the whole ring in wax so Suzie could see it take shape. I sent her the initial wax design for approval, and once she was happy with it, I refined the wax and sent the final design back for her sign-off.
Handcrafted in wax, cast in 9ct yellow gold, and created entirely around the person who would wear it.
Her stone, her lifestyle, her budget – made uniquely hers.
