A customer’s own drawing, translated into a wearable, handcrafted object.
This customer brought me her own drawing of a cross — a design that already meant something to her, long before it became a piece of jewellery. My job wasn’t to design something new; it was to interpret what she’d already made, as closely and honestly as I could, and translate it into metal she could wear.
This commission was a little different because the design didn’t start with me – it started with her.
My customer came to me with her own drawing of a cross and asked me to bring it to life as a piece of jewellery.
Her original drawing — the starting point for the finished piece.
From there, it became a collaborative process. We worked through a gemstone selection, I sourced several options for her to choose from, and she selected these beautiful deep red garnets. I kept her involved as the piece developed in wax, sharing progress along the way and getting her final approval before it was sent for casting.
Once the cross returned to my bench in sterling silver, I set each garnet by hand and worked on the final finish. I gave her the choice between an oxidised finish, which would emphasise the deeper textures and give the piece a more aged, relic-like character, or high-polished silver. She chose the high polish for a brighter, more luxe finish.
I particularly loved the challenge of this commission. Working from someone else’s creative idea pushes me outside the designs I might naturally make myself and gives me the opportunity to develop my skills while creating something completely personal to them.
This wasn’t simply something I designed for someone. It was her idea, interpreted and brought to life through my hands.
Her drawing. Her choices. Her piece. Made by my hands.
